St Peter’s College was founded in 1847 and moved to its present site in 1854.1 It includes a fine collection of stone buildings in the Gothic style. The chapel, designed by Edward Angus Hamilton, was opened in 18642 and extended in 1873 through the addition of a chancel, sanctuary and flèche, and in 1877-1878 through the organ chamber and vestry.3 The seating is arranged in collegiate style and there is a fine collection of stained glass including a window by William Wailes, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The organ built was built in 1877 by Bishop & Son, London, who exported at least four other organs to South Australia, at St Paul’s Church, Adelaide (now lost), St Peter’s Cathedral (now at St Augustine’s, Unley), St Michael’s, Mitcham and St Andrew’s, Walkerville (destroyed).4

It was rebuilt in 1974 by J.E. Dodd & Sons Gunstar Organ Works. Apart from enlargement, the sound of the organ appears to have been strengthened to cope with congregational accompaniment, for which the original instrument must have been sadly inadequate. In 2015, electric stop action was introduced.
