The building of this church was funded by Mr James Gartrell. It was opened on 14 November 1914 and was designed by Woods, Bagot & Jory architects in association with Laybourne Smith.1 It was lavishly constructed in stone in the Gothic style.

The organ, built by J.E. Dodd and the gift of Mr Gartrell, was opened on 21 July 1915. The case was a diminutive copy of the Dodd organ at the Wesleyan Church, Kent Town. It was a small two-manual organ of 12 speaking stops.

The organ was rebuilt and enlarged by J.E. Dodd & Sons Gunstar Organ Works in 1948 and 1966. The instrument was further refurbished in 1983 by George Stephens Pty Ltd from donations received in recognition of Lisle H. Chambers, Organist and Choir Master at the church from 1921 to 1971.3
