The Anglican Cathedral of St Peter Apostle and Martyr
Armidale
1896 A. Hunter & Son, Clapham, London. (2m., 22 sp.st., 6c., tub.pn)
From 1998 OHTA Conference booklet:
Designed by J. Horbury Hunt in collaboration with Bishop James Francis Turner and built between 1871 and 1878 by A. Smith, this small, brick cathedral is unlike any other neo-Gothic building in Australia of that period. Since the general quality of bricks was inferior and sandstone was too expensive as an alternative, Horbury Hunt insisted that builders submit brick samples with their tenders. The cost of the building came to £8,000 minus the tower which, although provided for in Horbury Hunt's plans, was later added in 1938.[1]
The first organ was a single manual of 11 stops supplied by George Fincham in 1878 - his second instrument sent to NSW In 1896 this instrument was replaced by the Hunter organ incorporating two stops of the Fincham, namely the Flute 4' on the Great and the Bourdon 16' on the Pedal. The reason was that these stops had presumably been provided for in the building of the organ in England. [2] In 1996 Peter D.G. Jewkes Pty Ltd carried out a complete restoration with Ray Holland as consultant.
